The Virginia Department of Health (VDOH) has developed an Health Opportunity Index, a composite measure of the social determinants of health, in order to provide a baseline for communities in the state to determine what factors lead to positive health outcomes and healthy communities. The VDOH developed the index because it was aware of the health inequities that exist among people of varying socioeconomic, racial/ethnic and rural/urban backgrounds. The creation of the index led to the development of a health assessment, and a state health improvement plan, called Virginia’s Plan for Well-Being 2016-2020. Read the story below to find out more about the state’s efforts.
