The Mid-Atlantic RHEC Announces Recipient of 2016 Health Equity Hero Award

The Mid-Atlantic RHEC has announced Patricia N. Mathews as the winner of the 2016 Health Equity Hero Award. The award recognizes the exemplary achievement of individuals who support community efforts in the goal of ending health disparities and promoting health equity.

Ms. Mathews is the first President & CEO of the Northern Virginia Health Foundation, a position that involves developing coalitions and collaboratives and that she assumed after gaining more than 25 years of philanthropic experience. She has been recognized for her efforts to directly address the social determinants of health in underserved communities by working with local government agencies and foundations to shed light on the struggles faced by people living in Northern Virginia. Ms. Mathews led the foundation to conduct research on the link between an individual’s ZIP code and life expectancy and to publish a related report titled, "Why Life Expectancy Varies in Northern Virginia".
